For most Chinese medicine practitioners, the opportunity to share a learning experience with a grand master of traditional Chinese medicine is a dream come true. This September, Minnesota's acupuncture community will have such a master available in the person of Dr. Ding Yi'e. It is hard to exaggerate the importance of the legendary Ding family in the history of Chinese medicine. Strongly associated with the four-hundred-year-old medical traditions of the Meng He Medicine, the Ding family became the foremost medical dynasty in Chinese history. Dr. Ding Yi'e is the son of Ding Jimin, grandson of Ding Zhongying and great-grandson of Ding Ganren, the most renowned family lineage of Chinese medicine. These four generations encompass the changes that traditional Chinese medicine has undergone during the last one hundred turbulent years of Chinese history.

In this seminar, Professor Ding will focus on the many expressions of liver disorders. He brings insight to the often-confusing range of symptoms and diseases associated with the liver, including depression, digestive disorders, dizziness, high blood pressure, hepatitis and cancer. Drawing on classical traditions, family history, and his own fifty years of clinical experience, Dr. Ding brings his unique knowledge to bear on the proper understanding of liver diseases. The subtlety of his perceptions in this field and his ability to assess complex disease patterns open a window for TCM practitioners who attend his lecture. How is rebellious liver-qi invading the spleen differentiated from rebellious liver-qi invading the stomach? How does a practitioner treat an upsurge in liver yang due to liver blood deficiency as opposed to an upsurge in liver yang due to liver/kidney yin deficiency? Ding Ganren's eight approaches to treating liver diseases, as presented by his great-grandson, will bring you into the real practice of Chinese medicine.

A scholar-doctor in the historical tradition of China, Ding Yi'e is currently a chief physician at Long Hua Hospital in Shanghai, as well as being a professor at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A direct inheritor of the Ding family tradition and the Meng He medical tradition, Dr. Ding Yi'e has an encyclopedic knowledge of TCM internal medicine and warm febrile disease. His reputation in Chinese medicine is well-earned, both because of his hundred years' family tradition and his dedicated fifty years' practice of traditional Chinese medicine. Please join Dr. Ding Yi'e for a unique learning experience.

Sunday, October 11: Pulse Diagnosis - Advanced Techniques for Diagnosis & Treatment

Accurate pulse diagnosis is fundamental to the successful practice of TCM. However, it can take many years to gain the experience necessary to correctly interpret pulses. This seminar enables participants to access the knowledge that Dr. Yubin Lu has acquired through several decades of clinical experience. Dr. Lu's book, Pulse Diagnosis, is highly regarded around the world as one of the most authoritative texts on the subject. As Dr. Lu shares his innovative ideas and techniques regarding the formation and differentiation of pulses, seminar participants will gain a solid understanding of various pulse conditions and how best to apply this knowledge in their clinic practice.

Yubin Lu, Ph.D., TCMD, L.Ac. is the academic dean of AAAOM and the chief architect of AAAOM's curriculum. He received his TCMD degree from the Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as his Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Chinese medicine. Dr. Lu has more than seventy publications in print, and is actively involved in TCM research.

Sunday, October 18: Keys to Successful Treatment of Eczema and Psoriasis

Eczema and psoriasis can be frustrating conditions for both patients and practitioners. Patients often spend years trying one ineffective approach after another, or are forced to rely on drugs such as corticosteroids for relief. Dermatology textbooks inform us that psoriasis is a lifelong disease. TCM practitioners know that Chinese medicine should be very effective in treating these conditions, but often they are not sure exactly how to apply their knowledge. If you would like to improve your ability to analyze eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions, and be confident that you are choosing the most effective acupuncture and herbal formulas, you will find answers to your questions at Dr. Chen's seminar. In her practice at the AAAOM student/faculty clinic, Dr. Chen has successfully treated dozens of eczema and psoriasis patients.

Hong Chen, Ph.D., TCMD, L.Ac., received her Master's degree in TCM gynecology from Chengdu University of TCM and her Ph.D. degree in TCM dermatology from Guangzhou University of TCM. She has been a post-doctoral fellow at the New York University Medical Center, and has published more than twenty research papers on TCM gynecology and dermatology.

Sunday, November 8: TCM Febrile Disease Patterns and H1N1

As swine flu sweeps around the world, everyone has been caught up in the attempt to understand and deal with it. People want to avoid it, but it is everywhere. People want to be vaccinated, but the vaccine is difficult to obtain. People want to treat it, but are told to just stay home and ride it out. Can anyone offer an effective way to understand and treat the situation as it exists today? Chinese medicine is in a position to fill this void - to offer preventive strategies for those who are not yet affected and treatment protocols for those who are affected.

Here is an opportunity to apply Chinese medicine wisdom and practical experience to a health care crisis that is unfolding before us. Dr. Yubin Lu is recognized as one of the fifteen most influential Chinese medicine scholar/doctors in the West. He is an expert in TCM febrile disease theory. Through their understanding of cold febrile disease and warm febrile disease, Chinese doctors have been successful in mitigating infectious epidemics for centuries. Join Dr. Lu as he focuses his expertise and years of clinical experience on the swine flu epidemic. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to access the knowledge and living experience of a master TCM practitioner.

Topics Covered in this Seminar: history of the H1N1 virus, current situation in the U.S. and around the world, clinical manifestations of H1N1, and suggestions for care based on Dr. Lu's personal experience.

TCM Understanding of H1N1 Influenza: swine flu and febrile disease, swine flu and warm disease, analysis of symptoms and course of disease, and analysis of disease patterns.

TCM Treatments for H1N1 Influenza: suggested treatment as practiced in China, suggested prevention methods, treatment based on pattern diagnosis, and discussion of recommended herbal formulas.

Sunday, November 8: Processing Chinese Medicinal Herbs

In this day-long seminar, Dr. Chi provides both a lecture and a lab experience in the processing of Chinese herbs for medicinal purposes. Beginning with an explanation of the purposes of herb processing and preparation, Dr. Chi then provides detailed information about various methods of processing including water-based processing, stir-fry processing, and "forge" or high-heat processing. The addition of "adjuvants," or auxiliary substances such as salt, clay, rice, wine, honey, etc. adds an important dimension to herbal processing. Dr. Chi not only discusses these processing techniques in depth, he also demonstrates them in the course of his lecture.

Cheng Chi, TCMD, L.Ac., received his academic degrees from Yunnan College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as teaching there. He also taught at the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in New Mexico and the University of East and West Medicine in California. Dr. Chi has over thirty years' experience in TCM practice, teaching and research, and specializes in Dietary Therapy and TuiNa.

Sunday, November 15: Treating Gynecological Conditions with Acupuncture

Gynecological conditions are among the most common health problems seen in an acupuncture practice. Do you know how to successfully relieve endometrial pain? Are you familiar with the special points that can promote ovulation? Would you like to learn key techniques which will help you reach your treatment goals? In this seminar, Dr. Jiang shares her knowledge of the most effective points, both local and distal, that she has used to successfully treat hundreds of patients with gynecological conditions. Emphasis will be placed on specific acupoints and important point combinations, as well as special needling techniques applied to these points. Among the conditions covered are: abdominal pain, excessive bleeding, menstrual and menopausal problems, and infertility.

Wen Jiang, Ph.D., TCMD, L.Ac., is well-qualified to present information on acupuncture techniques, having received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in acupuncture from Shandong University of TCM, and a Ph.D. in acupuncture from Tianjin College of TCM. She has practiced acupuncture for over 15 years and has an extensive publication list relating to needling techniques and acupuncture for gynecological problems.
